Training To Jump Higher
Whilst many people assume that certain players are naturally gifted when it comes to jumping, this is only part of the whole picture. The truth is, that the top players have put hundreds of hours into improving that part of the game through regular training and conditioning. If you too want to be able to jump high, you will need to follow a similar method.
There are many exercises that you can practice in order to improve your jump, and we have a full guide to this at the end of the article. In the meantime though, here are a few simple ones to give you a taste.
Simple Jump Exercises
Let’s begin, with jumping rope. This is a great exercise which improves coordination and flexibility, burns calories, and increases leg strength. If you ask any top player how to dunk and the exercises they do to achieve fitness, they will all mention jumping rope!
Running is another simple, obvious, yet little thought of method of improving your jump skills. It strengthens the leg muscles, core and glutes, and can also help with flexibility. Sprint training in particular is great for building the explosive strength needed in jumping.
2 Easy Jump Exercises
Two more specific exercises geared to helping you jump, are the Scissor Jump, and the Ice Skating Jump. Again, both are essential for building explosive strength, and also have practical value when it comes to how to dunk.
Begin the exercise in a lunge position, with one foot forward and the knee bent. The hips should be facing forward, and the legs no more than shoulder width apart. With your arms at your side, jump upward as high as you can, and switch the position of your feet in mid air. You should land on the floor gently, with your opposite foot now in the forward position. You should then repeat the exercise for as many reps and sets as your workout program suggests.
Ice Skaters Jump
Begin by standing in a crouched position. You should then jump to your right, by pushing off with your left leg and landing on your right foot first. You can then either repeat the process moving all the way to your right for a few reps. Or, you can switch feet. The idea of course is to give the legs an even workout.
